ATV Track Trap: Track Tension and Adjusting Techniques

What is an ATV track trap?

When going over a log or rock or even a steep frozen snow bank and the back of the track is past the log and you try to back up this will cause rear of the front track to catch on the back of the log and twist the torsion bars.
Solution: keep going forward or somehow get the rear of the track back over the log by putting a rock or block in between the log and track.PS this sometimes happens in deep water and you will have to remove the object(log rock etc or ramp it up with rocks to get back over the log

TRACK TENSION IS VERY IMPORTANT:
When running a track system with a drive gear going through the track like CATTRACKS, TATOU and commanders, If the track is loose it will wear the side of the track with the drive gear where the drive gear goes through and put more pressure on the hi-fax. Most premature hi fax failure is from too loose of a track causing much more friction on the hifax.

TESTING TRACK ADJUSTMENT:
For the perfect set up do as the owners Manuel says and get a 15 to 20 lb weight and hang on the down side of the track where the manufacturer recommends and adjust to there specs.. After you have done this you will get the exact tension. What i have found out is when the track is on the machine and i lift very firmly on the inside and outside of the track at the highest point the drive gear goes through the track. If the track can be moved more then 1/16Th of a inch up off the drive gear it is too loose,, I always do a quick walk around my machine before i go on long trips. If it seams a little loose it is OK to drive just do not do any extreme sidehilling or fast turns as this might slip the track off. If it moves more then 1/4 inch you will loose a track. It is not fun to put them on in the woods. After aprox. 5000 miles in snow i had a track come off do to me not checking tension first and it took aproxiametly 2 hours to put back on. Needless to say i check my tension all the time now before leaving on trips..

CATTRACK TRACK ADJUSTING TIPS:
It is very important on side by side or utv that the track is adjusted properly as the extra weight of these machines will throw tracks more often if not adjusted properly and wear the hifax much faster.

#1 When putting grease in the track adjuster i found out that the first pump does very little,, after the second pump the horseshoe adjuster will pop and adjust much easier,
#2 After setting the tension with the grease gun you MUST MOVE THE TWO NUTS TO THE BACK OF THE ADJUSTING HORSESHOE AND YOU MUST TIGHTEN THE TWO NUTS AGAINST EACH OTHER: If you do not do this to both the inside and outside of the adjuster they will vibrate back and you will have a loose track.
